Pope Says it's Time to Accept Life at Every Stage
Pope Francis was named Person of the Year by Time Life Magazine. He urged America to
accept life at every stage

Amid misinterpretations of the pontiff’s pro-life stance in the mainstream media, the Holy Father continues to affirm his unwavering belief, completely united to that of the Catholic Church, that human life is sacred from conception to natural death.

Leighton's Gift
After the loss of their daughter, Leighton, her parents mourned not only her death, but sadness that their families were not able to see her. She lived only a few weeks and visiting in the Neonatal ICU is limited. The family also missed many hours with Leighton's twin brother Jaxon who was released from the hospital after 74 days. Leighton's parents began raising money for web cameras - Leighton's Gift. Web cams were installed at Texas Health Hospitals in Plano, Dallas and Fort Worth this week.
Leighton's gift will benefit many families who can communicate with their children through the web cams. Not only viewing the infants, but reading, talking and singing to them.

Treasures
Valued treasures are different for each person, it might be an expensive piece of jewelry or a simple rock that was picked up by a child and put in a treasure box. But sometimes a treasure is something most of us take for granted - furniture.Last week a single mother with two children, ages 9 and 3, came to our Center. She said they were eating, sitting and sleeping on the floor. Her meager income was a disability check. The mother was concerned about her children who were ashamed to let any of their friends see the empty apartment. One of our volunteers, who lives on a fixed income herself, promised to make some phone calls to local churches and people who might be able to help. After she received no response to her requests, she talked to her husband who agreed they could put together fifty dollars and check at local garage sales for suitable furniture. They found exactly what they were looking for but at a price well over the fifty dollars they had.
The volunteer went home and prayed for the mother and her family and was guided to return to the garage sale the following day. The furniture was still there and she talked to the owner, explaining why they were anxious to purchase the furniture for a family in need. The owner agreed to take fifty dollars for the wooden table and chairs, leather love seat, matching rocker, end table, lamps and a twin bed. The family also received a queen bed from another source.
The mother cried tears of joy and the volunteer was excited to know she was able to help.

Life Skill Classes Offered at the Center
The
women who visit our Center are truly in need of more than immediate help. They
need love, respect and acceptance. They also need family life training. By
offering classes that meet their needs, we feel we are helping them to make
better choices in life. This takes more space, more work, more volunteers and
more finances. We have confidence that God will supply what is needed.
55%
of women say they have abortions because they feel they can’t afford a baby or
they do not feel confident. Our Life
Skill classes will help them
CDC
reports that almost 50% of women who have abortions will have another one within
their lifetime. Providing training programs in parenting, emphasizing mothering
skills, can help create a family environment that may prevent future abortions.
By
offering our Life-skill classes, we will be able to reach community support by
those who may be leaning toward pro-abortion but also see the advantage of
helping those who choose to carry their babies to full term.
Note: We offer free diapers to those who attend classes at our Center.

What We Are Doing at The Center
What we are doing at the Center
We are a
Center for life - life for the mom and her baby.
So far this
year we have ministered to over 1,000 clients.
420 have been pregnant. We were able to
follow up with 250 pregnant women and know they gave birth. (By presenting them
with a baby gift, upon the birth of her baby, we encourage the mother to come
back to the Center and enable us to document their baby’s birth).
Some of
those babies were born to mothers who were abortion-minded when they first came to the Center, but changed
their mind. 14 came to know Jesus as Savior.
The
Pregnancy Help Center is an arm of the Church, reaching out to women with truth
about life in the midst of a culture that regards life as expendable.

Abortion
News -
An
average of 3,322 abortions are performed in the U.S. every day.
137
abortions per hour.
Every
30 seconds a life is lost.
The United
States, China, North Korea and Canada have the most radical abortion policies
in the world. We are one of only four
countries that allow abortions to take place through 9 months of a pregnancy
(for any reason) and sometimes subsidized with our tax money. The most dangerous place in the world is in
the womb. It is also a country where a child has arms and legs and other body
parts amputated by a doctor, during the abortion process, and not given
anesthesia.
Every year
32,000 Americans die on our nation’s highways. Every 10 days, that same number
of abortions are performed in America.
And
abortions have been legal for over 40 years in the U.S. To date more than 60
million lives have been terminated. The CDC abortion records show 55,772,015 in
2012, but they admit the actual termination number is higher than shown because
different states have different laws on reporting statistics.
We have lost more than 25% of our
population.

- The risks of infection and hemorrhage
- The potential danger to a subsequent pregnancy and of infertility
- The possibility of increased risk of breast cancer following an induced abortion and the natural protective effect of a completed pregnancy in avoiding breast cancer

Wave from a Baby Who Was Given Life
A positive pregnancy test isn't always a joyous occasion. Whether it's because of relationship problems, lack of finances, unsupportive parents or other seemingly endless obstacles, often an abortion seems to be an easy way out for the mother.
That was the case for a couple who had fallen on hard times, were struggling with their current family and didn't think they could feed another.
They went to a well known abortion clinic, paid money they had little of for both the test and a sonogram. Even though Texas law states that the mother be shown the sonogram picture, she didn't see it.
With heavy hearts the couple went home to wait the required 24 hours before the abortion could be performed, but on the morning of the scheduled procedure, the father turned to his wife and said he couldn't do it, she told him she had second thoughts too. Nothing had changed for this family except their desire to find a way to support their child.
On the recommendation of a pro-life group outside the abortion clinic, they came to The Pregnancy Help Center where we have many resources to help them.
Our nurse did another sonogram and this time showed the picture to the couple. The baby clearly was happy with their decision and waved its hand.

What's Happening at the Center?
At the beginning of May, a client stepped into the Pregnancy Help Center worried about a pregnancy, and pressured by her boyfriend, considered abortion as her only option. She had already taken the Plan B pill (sometimes called the 'Morning After Pill') but it had not been successful.
After meeting with a counselor, she agreed to come in the next day for a sonogram and brought her boyfriend with her. She was tearful when they heard the baby's heart beat, he looked away from the screen.
The couple left and our calls to them went unanswered*
But a phone call a few weeks later had the staff and volunteers excited that we would be able to help another young mother. "I'm keeping the baby!" she said when she contacted the Center. "Thank you, ladies for your prayers. God is doing amazing things."
We can't wait to hear more about her change of heart and to help her during her pregnancy.
* We only contact clients after a visit if they give us permission to do so.

Maternity Leave
Other countries find it hard to believe that in the U.S. women (and men) are entitled to very little maternity/paternity leave and it is usually unpaid. See map from New York Times. More info at Huffington Post site.
The Family and Medical Leave Act allows for three months unpaid leave during a twelve month period. Although benefits vary from company to company, most require you to use any PTO (Paid Time Off) during this time which varies in each organization but usually amounts to 21 days per year of combined vacation/sick/holidays. After that the time is unpaid.
Yahoo announced that it has a new policy offering 8 weeks of paid maternity leave. The same amount is offered by Google and Facebook. Let's hope that other companies follow suit.
Here's what leave is offered in other countries.
More detail on what's offered for new mothers in Europe here.
