The Mental Toll of Abortion

In a recent article, Jeanne Monahan writes about the emotional toll that women suffer resulting from an abortion. Here at the Pregnancy Help Center, we give women who are considering an abortion as much information as we have available, and having held post abortion classes here for many years, we are well aware of the downside of an uninformed decision.
According to Ms. Monahan's article, a study published by the British Journal of Psychiatry, showed a high percentage of women who have had an abortion are at an increased risk for mental problems.

Volunteer Spotlight

Pat is one of our nurses who joined the volunteers at the Pregnancy Help Center six years ago. She remembers the very old sonogram machine that was donated the Center at that time.

Born in Gainesville, Texas, Pat moved to Fort Worth when she was five years old and has a son, grandson, three stepchildren and seven step-grandchildren.

She remembers fighting with the old sonogram machine one morning and the resulting pictures were fuzzy. A young girl, who had made up her mind to have an abortion, agreed to have an ultrasound and Pat was concerned that she wouldn't be able to show her the baby, but suddenly the picture was clear and the baby waved his hand. The young girl changed her mind and chose to keep her child. We all have times of doubt and Pat says to remember that the Lord is always with you and will provide.

Pat is grateful to be working with kind and wonderful ladies. She says they have such a good time with one another and provide lots of love and encouragement.

Susan G. Koman to Discontinue Grant Programs to Planned Parenthood

The Susan G. Koman Foundation has announced that it will cut ties with Planned Parenthood.

The foundation has publicly tagged the decision to an ongoing congressional investigation, led by Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., into Planned Parenthood’s alleged use of public funds for abortion. The Hyde Amendment, a rider appended to every federal appropriations bill since 1976, bans doctors from using federal money to perform the procedures.

Komen has recently adopted a rule forbidding it from passing any money to groups under congressional investigation.

The Pregnancy Help Center

celebrated its 25th anniversary

at the historic Hilton Hotel in Fort Worth.

Polly Isinghood, The Pregnancy Help Center Director, presented a film about a pregnant young woman who had been living on the street. As with many of the clients who come to the Center, there was a happy ending. A counselor introduced her to someone at the Gladney Center for Adoption where she was offered a place at their residence. Not only did they help her with her pregnancy, and to select adoptive parents for her child, but the Gladney Center also gave her the skills to find a job. The young woman was excited to sleep in a bed and have a bathroom of her own. Something most of us take for granted.

The guest speaker, Pam Tebow, spoke of her experience while living in the Philippines with her husband. They are both missionaries.

During her pregnancy with her youngest son she contracted an illness that the doctor believed might harm the baby. He recommended an abortion. She refused, and despite the medical complications that could have resulted in a still birth, Tim Tebow was born. Tim grew up to become an Heisman Trophy Award winner and is now a quarter back for the Denver Broncos.

Polly thanked the volunteers who keep the Center open and offer encouragement and support to the young ladies who come in, but each of us knows that we are the fortunate ones to be part of an organization that helps women and their families.

DONATION FROM THE HEART

Each donation is precious to us, but one that stood out was from a ten year old girl. Hannah had been saving her money and had over $100. At the banquet she told her dad she wanted to give the money to the Center along with a teddy bear. Her dad asked her more than once if she wanted to just give a portion of her savings, but she was adamant – she wanted to give it all.

I donated money to the Pregnancy Help Center because, in July I went to a camp called Kids Who Care and one day they gave us a cloud card and told us that whatever we wrote on that cloud card would become real so I thought and finally decided that I wanted to stop abortion. I had decided this because wouldn’t it be great to be in heaven someday and have someone come up to you and say when you donated that money I was one of those babies that survived.

Notes from the Director

Looking back at the past year is such a blessing to all our staff and volunteers. We saw miracle after miracle from God. We look forward to the new year with anticipation of watching His hand in saving more lives through our work at the Center.

The first week of this year was full of awesome opportunities to minister to pregnant women. One client is living in a half-way house for addicts. She is now clean from drugs and two months into a pregnancy. Having already aborted five times, it would have been easy for her to make that choice again, but someone suggested she visit the Pregnancy Help Center. After a sonogram showed her the baby was moving, and hearing the baby’s beating heart, she was touched by God to choose life for her child. Please join us in praying for her and all our clients. So many women need to understand that their choices have a ripple effect and make a difference in so many lives. My desire is that every client we minister to will become a picture of the Proverbs 31 Godly Woman.

So you see, I have one of the most rewarding jobs in the world. My heart is full of gratitude to all of you for making that possible. Thanks to the Women’s Ministry (in several churches) that have given the Center a baby shower, to all the partners that have supplied our needs in one way or another and for those who gave financially to help us meet our budget.

Jesus did not come to make God’s love possible, but to make God’s love visible. Our volunteers work five days a week to be the visible love of God. Thank you for helping our ministry.

Happy New Year and God’s blessing to you and your family.

During our first 18 months of opening the Center, 35 babies were born and we had 13 professions of faith. Each year those numbers are growing. Twenty-five years later nearly 40,000 clients have walked through our doors. This year we provided help for over 300 babies and 50 women accepted Christ.

Texas Abortion Law

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has allowed the Texas abortion law to be enforced while the law is being challenged. The abortion law requires doctors to show sonograms to patients.

Choose Life License Plates

Did you know you can now purchase a Choose Life License Plate?

Due to the efforts of State Senator John Carona (R-Dallas) and State Representative Larry Phillips (R-Sherman) who authored bills during the last legislative session the plates are now available for purchase.

Of the $30 annual fee, $22 goes to the Office of the Attorney General of Texas to be distributed to qualified organizations that provide counseling and material assistance to pregnant women considering placing their unborn children for adoption, including pregnancy resource centers, maternity homes, Gabriel Projects, and adoption agencies.

Organizations that provide or promote abortion are not eligible to receive funds. The remaining $8 covers state and county administrative costs.

Volunteer Spotlight

Cora Griffith began volunteering at the Pregnancy Help Center nearly six years ago. Raised by her maternal grandparents in Salem, Ohio, Cora grew up with two sisters, two half-sisters, and two half-brothers. Church was always an important part of her life.
She remembers a client who visited the Center and wanted an abortion. She already had a young son and lived with her mother who also had a young child. After Cora talked with her about Christian values and adoption, the young woman talked to someone at the Gladney Adoption Center. Cora was happy that the young mother called her several times during the process and thanked her.
Grateful that other volunteers are willing to pray with her for help and understanding when she meets with a client, Cora knows that she is not alone when meeting with a woman facing a crisis pregnancy.
After her day at the center is over, she leaves with a sense of satisfaction and feeling "filled up."
Cora's kindness and willingness to jump in and help is infectious. She is a precious lady, who has touched many hearts.

Randi joined the Pregnancy Help Center as a Nurse Manager in March 2010 and has been an integral part of our team. Randi, a registered nurse, operates our ultrasound, giving women a chance to see their baby for the first time.
Unplanned pregnancies have affected her family, but she knows that God has created each child for a purpose and she wanted to show moms and families what a blessing the child is that's growing.
Born in Tennessee, she moved to Texas and attended Seminary, but after returning to her hometown, she married and the two of them moved back to Texas. They have one precious daughter.
One particular event Randi remembers was when a woman came to the center whose boyfriend wanted her to abort the baby. They saw the gestational sac (at around 5 weeks), but Randi was also able to pick up the baby's heartbeat at 120 bpm. At that point the boyfriend's face showed surprise. "That's a heartbeat?" he asked and then changed his mind about pushing his girlfriend to abort.
Randi wants each of the girls who come into the center to be freed from the lies they have heard and to point out to them freedom that Christ promises.
Randi was truly an answer to prayer and each day she shows young girls what life looks like before their child is born. We're all blessed to have Randi as part of our team.

We're looking forward to the Pregnancy Help Center annual banquet on October 6 and in particular hearing Pam Tebow who will be the guest speaker.

The notoriety of the Tebow family increased when their youngest son won the Heisman Trophy following his sophomore season with the Florida Gators. Because ESPN aired the portion of the interview with Pam that focused on her refusal to abort “Timmy” when she was advised to do so, she now has a national platform to encourage the pro-life message. Pam is also passionate about encouraging women to trust the Lord with all their hearts for all their lives.

As the daughter of an army colonel, Pam Tebow lived all over the world until she was seventeen, when she entered the University of Florida, where she graduated with honors in Journalism and Communication. While in college, Pam met Bob, and they were married in 1971.

The Tebows have five children, two sons-in-law, three granddaughters, and one grandson. Each of the children and their spouses are active in various ministries!

Pam and Bob have been called “homeschool pioneers.” They began homeschooling in 1982, when “homeschool” was not yet a word and homeschooled all five of their children from kindergarten through high school. All five of the Tebow children received college scholarships.
The Tebows lived for a number of years as missionaries in the Philippines, where Bob continues to have an ongoing ministry. He employs 50 nationals and runs an orphanage for 50 orphans. Pam is very involved in her husband’s ministry, coordinating numerous projects and personnel.
Over the last several years, Pam has enjoyed speaking in many cities across the country. She is currently writing a book on parenting.

Gladney Center for Adoption

As part of training for Pregnancy Help Center volunteers, a group of women visited the Gladney Center for Adoption in Fort Worth. The Center, which began as The Texas Children's Home, has long been known locally as the place where Edna Gladney, a superintendent for over 30 years, brought about many changes in the well being of children.

We toured the visitors' center with its interesting artifacts and an overview of the Center's history.

With a wide range of services and programs, the Center has a dorm residence which houses up to 30 women, financial assistance during pregnancy, and medical care.

The mothers have so many choices today and adoption is no longer "giving away" a baby - a term that is no longer used. The birth mothers are offered multiple adoption choices and often stay in touch with the adoptive parents. They are free to choose adoptive parents for their child and encouraged to make a list of what they want for their child.

Twenty five years ago after listening to Point of View on Christian radio, a family became burdened to help women and their children in Fort Worth and the surrounding area. Putting together a plan was their first step and with the help of the pastor at Birchman Baptist Church, they formulated a crisis pregnancy center. In July 1986 the Pregnancy Help Center opened its doors to provide women with physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

Now the center has both paid staff and over 40 volunteers and has ministered to thousands of women.

We look forward to the next 25 years of serving the Fort Worth community and offering assistance to women who need guidance and resources for both them and their child.

Baby Sign Language

One of the classes offered at the Pregnancy Help Center in Fort Worth is Baby Sign Language (call for dates and times 817-560-2226).

Georgina Niemeyer, a Baby Signing Time instructor, takes the class through a series of signs that can be shared with a young baby or child. Words such as eat, milk, please, more, mommy and daddy are shown. She stresses this should not replace speaking to a child who can hear, but can be used as an additional tool to communicate, especially during the time before a child speaks clearly. A child understands the signs long before he/she learns to use them and even a child of six months old will begin to recognize the hand gestures. For a child who can use even limited sign language, it can alleviate some of the frustrations that comes when his or her needs are misunderstood.

Volunteer Spotlight

Every Monday evening Debbie stands in front of a group of young parents and pops in a Focus on the Family DVD on parenting. Your Child is a parenting seminar by Dr. Dobson and covers many topics that are later discussed as a class.

Born in Indiana, her family had moved to different military posts including Spain and Guam.

After hearing about the Pregnancy Help Center during a Sunday school class at Birchman Baptist Church, Debbie thought about the problems she had undergone with teenage girls in her home and offered to volunteer at the center.

Her two years at the Center have brought with it an assortment of class members and she remembers one in particular. An impatient "rough" looking seventeen year old man asked for diapers. The Director of the Center encouraged him to attend the parenting class (free diapers are offered to anyone who attends the class). While Debbie conducted the class, both the volunteers in the office and Debbie herself, prayed. His comment when leaving was "Wow." Debbie recalls that moment as one of the many blessings while working at the Pregnancy Help Center.

Often the volunteers lose touch with the young ladies who come in, but one approached Debbie at church. "I want to thank you for the help you gave me at the Pregnancy Help Center last year," she said. "It made me think of some things and I've made some changes for the better."

Debbie enjoys Sudoku puzzles, teaching a kindergarten Sunday school class and above all she loves working at the PHC where she encounters blessings each week.

Debbie has touched many lives with her parenting classes and is dedicated to helping both young men and young women circumnavigate the struggles of a new parent.

Volunteer Spotlight

When you first walk into the Fort Worth Pregnancy Help Center, Connie will probably be the first person to greet you with a warm smile. She has been volunteering at the center for five years and is now the Assistant Director. Born in Iowa and once a single mom, she wants to help others who might be struggling as she once was. With a 48 year marriage under her belt, she has three children and seven grandchildren, but still remembers how someone helped her through her difficult years as a single parent. Looking back over her time with clients during the past five years, Connie particularly remembers a young girl who cried when Connie offered to pray for both the client and her baby. "I expected judgement and ridicule," the tearful young woman said. "But instead I found someone who wants to pray for me."

After working for a large company, Connie is grateful that she works with people who will stop and pray with her over a difficult situation and join with her in praise when her God given gifts are used to bless others.

And when Connie sits with a young girl, she knows the heartache that can go along with an unplanned pregnancy. Connie's first child was adopted in 1963. Her story has a happy ending though as her son found her, and in 1999 they were reunited.

Each volunteer has their own unique story and anyone who comes to the center will quickly learn that the volunteers will offer encouragement and help.

Parenting Classes

The Pregnancy Help Center offers a twelve week parenting class. Using the Focus on the Family Essentials of Discipline DVDs, the class follows each session with discussion. Dr. James Dobson, who is the founder of Focus on the Family, has been instrumental in providing help to families for over 30 years and his DVDs offer a way to find balance in discipline and how to change discipline as the child grows. According to Dr. Dobson, when properly applied, discipline stimulates tender affection and mutual respect between parent and child.

Debbie will be guiding the discussion.

In this DVD, Ten Things Every Child Needs, child development experts, Dr. T. Berry Brazelton, J. Felton Earls, Dr. Bruce Perry and others explain how early interactions with a baby help to develop it's brain. Researchers say that by including these steps, a child's IQ may be improved during the first five years of life. There is nothing complicated about giving a child what it needs, but this DVD is a reminder that touch and communication is imperative to a child's development.

Non Profit pregnancy resource centers, first opened in the late 1960s and quickly expanded across America. CPCs, as they are sometimes referred to, offer free pregnancy tests, someone to guide the client through a list of choices and local community programs following up with maternity clothes and child birth classes.

The Pregnancy Help Center in Fort Worth opened its doors in 1986, and with the help of many volunteers, has grown and seen many changes in the original design of the CPCs. During the past few years sonograms have been offered.

Realizing that an unplanned pregnancy is not the only crisis a woman may be facing, the Center helps her to make wise choices in other areas. The Pregnancy Help Center offers classes in finances, parenting, infant cpr, sign language for infants and toddlers, bible study and many more.
